HABITAT LANDING HOMEOWNERS CLEAN-UP

Habitat Landing homeowners and staff from Habitat for Humanity took some time out of their busy lives on Saturday, February 12 to clean-up the marshy area nearby their Big Pine Key community. A lot of debris had washed ashore, and these local residents took it upon themselves to brave the chilly winds and gloomy skies to pick up the trash to return the area to its original pristine state. Thank you to those who came out to help clean up the environment.

JOY GALLERY HOSTS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RECEPTION

Local artist and Habitat homeowner, Abigail White, works on her latest creation at Joy Gallery's champagne reception, held ast Sunday for Habitat for Humanity of Key West & Lower FL Keys. Gallery owners, Jim & Teresa Wallace, hosted a lovely event for Habitat featuring Abigail's artwork. Joy Gallery, located at 1124 Duval St., has a wide variety of excellent artwork, which will soon include some original works by White.

Last December, Abigail gave Habitat an original painting of her new community, Bayside Landing, during a holiday get-together. Everyone realized immediately what a special talent she had, with her whimsical rendition of her neighbors' homes. Habitat has since had several giclees made of the painting, which are available for purchase to support the organization's mission of providing affordable housing in the Lower Keys. The original, now signed by none other than Habitat supporter, Jimmy Carter, is proudly hung in Habitat's Key West office on Appelrouth Lane.

White's other works - individual paintings of the Bayside Landing homes - were displayed at Joy Gallery and will soon be used to produce sets of notecards that will be used to raise funds for Habitat. For information on purchasing a giclee, or for information on supporting our local Habitat affiliate, please contact Habitat's Key West office at 305-294-9006 or visit the website: www.habitatlowerkeys.org.

WICKER GUESTHOUSE PARTICIPATES IN COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION TAX CREDIT PROGRAM WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF KEY WEST & LFK

Wicker Guesthouse Participates in Community Contribution Tax Credit Program with Habitat for Humanity of Key West & LFK Habitat for Humanity of Key West & Lower FL Keys has received a check for from Wicker Guesthouse that helped fund a home at Bayside Landing on Big Coppitt through Florida’s Community Contribution Tax Credit Program. Don Whitehead owns both Wicker Guesthouse and Ocean Breeze Inn, also a tax credit sponsor for Habitat last year.

The Community Contribution Tax Credit Program is a state funded incentive to encourage businesses that collect and remit state sales tax or are registered as C-corporations to support those who provide affordable housing locally.

It is a simple program in which to participate: Habitat staff helps complete the simple application with the business sponsor and files it with the State Department of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development. A letter of approval is issued to the business, then a second application is filed to receive the final donation from the Department of Revenue, which then issues a check to the business. Each tax paying entity may take credits up to $200,000 annually. The deadline for applying this year is June 30, 2011.

For more information on this incredibly easy and worthwhile program that keeps business tax dollars working right here in the Lower Keys, please call Susan K. Miller, Operations Director for Habitat: 305-294-9006.

HABITAT OF KEY WEST & LOWER KEYS RECEIVES GRANT FROM PUBLIX

Habitat for Humanity of Key West & Lower FL Keys recently received a grant in the amount of $8,000 from Publix Super Markets Charities.  This is the second grant our local Habitat has received from Publix to support the completion of the 18 new homes at Bayside Landing on Big Coppitt Key.

Publix has an aggressive community support program throughout the southern states.  George Jenkins founded Publix with the spirit of giving in mind. He was once asked, "If you hadn't given away so much, how much do you think you would be worth today?" His response, without hesitation: "Probably nothing."

Habitat for Humanity relies heavily on contributions from individual donors, local businesses and large corporations. like Publix, in order to build new homes for families who need a "hand up" to remain here in the Keys.  To learn more about how you can support your local Habitat for Humanity organization through contributions or volunteering, please visit their website at www.habitatlowerkeys.org or call 305-294-9006.
