Key West Navy Chiefs Assist with Hurricane Ian Property Clean-Up

Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Florida Keys welcomed the help of a group of dedicated volunteers from the Naval Air Station Key West on Saturday. The group of 23 Navy Chiefs helped clean up debris and perform repair work on an affordable rental complex that sustained damage during Hurricane Ian, which passed the Lower Keys as a strong hurricane on September 28th. “This is one of the best groups we have ever worked with,” said Mindy Sample, one of Habitat’s lead volunteers, “They worked so hard and were so much fun!”

Habitat regularly engages volunteer groups and has been ramping up the frequency of scheduled volunteer days in response to the local property damage resulting from the storm. “We are so lucky to have both the Naval Air Station Key West and the Coast Guard Sector Key West in the area to supply such hard working, civic-minded volunteers,” stated Habitat’s Executive Director Kristina Welburn.

To take part in one of Habitat’s volunteer days, either as an individual or as a group, contact Habitat’s Volunteer Coordinator Lily Williamson at 305-294-9006 ext. 1 or volunteer@habitatlowerkeys.org.
